Overview

Rifan Jakarta is a commercial project that reimagines what a Jakarta cafe can be when architecture, landscape, and hospitality program are conceived as a single integrated idea. The building typology is deliberately hybrid: a two-story complex that accommodates a ground-floor drive-through service lane, an indoor cafe and bar space, private function rooms, and a landmark open-air rooftop terrace. This stacking of uses reflects a deep understanding of Jakarta's urban culture, where speed and leisure coexist, where a customer might pick up coffee without leaving their car one day and linger across a rooftop table for two hours the next.

The dominant architectural statement of the exterior is the continuous white corrugated steel panel cladding that wraps both levels of the main volume. This industrial material choice is bold and deliberate: the vertical ribbing of the steel creates rhythm and texture across what might otherwise have been a plain surface, while the bright white tone keeps the building feeling fresh, clean, and inviting even under Jakarta's intense tropical sun. Atop this compact white base, a generous timber pergola structure extends dramatically beyond the building footprint as an open-frame canopy, its warm honey-brown tones creating a powerful material counterpoint to the white walls below. Botanical vines cascade from this pergola frame, softening the industrial edge with lush living greenery that transforms the rooftop from a simple terrace into something closer to an elevated garden in the sky.

The interior spaces are distributed across three distinct modes. The ground-floor coffee bar is the operational heart of the building: a terrazzo-finished counter in pale speckled grey anchors the brew station, where a full espresso bar setup faces both the indoor seating zone and the drive-through service window cut directly into the corrugated wall. Dark timber plank flooring throughout the ground floor introduces natural warmth against the cool white walls, and black wire bistro chairs with white round tables keep the furniture language simple, ensuring the architecture itself remains the visual protagonist. A black steel staircase with a timber handrail ascends from this floor to the upper level and rooftop, signalling the spatial journey upward.

The rooftop terrace is the project's defining spatial experience. Beneath the overhead botanical canopy, dining tables are arranged in relaxed clusters within a space framed entirely by open air and filtered green light. Dark round marble-topped tables on chrome pedestals, black shell chairs on textured dark floor tiles, and the soft movement of hanging flowers above create an atmosphere that is at once urban and deeply natural. This collision of hard industrial material and living plant is not accidental: it is the central design thesis of the entire building, a space that feels simultaneously like a botanical house, a rooftop gathering place, and a curated urban destination in a single authentic gesture.

Tucked at the rear of the ground floor, a set of private function and workspace rooms extends the building's commercial utility. These rooms carry the same corrugated-wall character as the main spaces, maintaining a recognisable material language throughout the program while offering quieter, more focused environments for meetings and administrative work. Together, these spaces ensure that Rifan Jakarta can serve multiple customer types from a single compact footprint, making it a genuinely versatile commercial building that does not look or feel like one. The whole project speaks to a generation of Jakarta entrepreneurs who understand that great architecture is a tool for building loyalty, community, and a destination worth returning to again and again.
